Many times managers and supervisors find themselves managing a new employee, or a group of new employees. New employees might not necessarily be new to the workforce and the industry, but the fact that they are new to the office or company calls for special attention from the manager or their supervisors. Studies show that giving special attention to a new employee helps them to perform better.

Whatever the case, handling new employees is not always easy, especially when it comes to creating workable schedules. In fact, scheduling new employees has been shown to be the most difficult part of handling new employees. After welcoming new employees and guiding them to their offices or desks, the next step should be to give them a tour and to take them through a basic setup of the company. For example, show them where to hang their coats, where to get or make their coffee, where to park, where the rest rooms are, and so on. If possible, it would be easier to assign a mentor to a new employee. Such a mentor will teach a new worker everything that needs to be learned, especially the important workplace details.

Teaching Them The Ropes

Teaching them the ropes can be done by providing them with information that will enable them to do their jobs effectively. Directing new employees to the company website is an effective way of teaching them the ropes. When it comes to assigning responsibilities, it is always possible to judge the knowledge a new employee has from their cover letter, resume and the interview/interviews performed, and thus assign or schedule them appropriately.

Most companies organize training sessions for new workers, even when they happen to be experienced employees. In addition to the training programs, it is important to give a new employee enough time to get accustomed to the job and the systems before giving them their first assignment.

Familiarizing Them With Fellow Workers

Within the first week; a staff meeting, or several meetings, should be organized to enable the new employee to meet with the people he or she will be interacting with on a daily basis. New workers should also be encouraged to freely approach and interact with fellow workers. In addition, new workers need to be introduced to clients and suppliers.

When Things Don’t Turn Out As Expected

Sometimes, things just don’t work as expected even when the recruitment process was done as it should. Some managers or supervisors tend to blame themselves when a new employee tries to fit in and doesn’t. Others will even go out of their way to make such employees comfortable, but when the employee in question is not interested in working as hard to fit in, then it could be that he or she is no longer interested in the new job or isn’t the right fit for the position. When this happens to be the case, then there is nothing much you can do as the manager, supervisor, or owner of the company.
