One of the most common myths in business is that part time workers are not as loyal as their full time counterparts. However, this is not necessarily true, and if you would like to retain these workers for the long haul and convert stellar workers to work full time, then you need to keep the following facts in mind-
Most part time workers get the short end of the stick when it comes to their pay. Employers assume that since they are not working full time, they are not entitled to full salaries. However, according to labor laws, part time workers have to be paid hourly wages and yes; they deserve a full day's pay if they work all 8 hours! Treating them as second class employees by giving them a wage less than the amount of work your regular workers receive will only de-motivate them.
Believe it or not, you will actually be able to save money once you start paying them fairly. Remember, part time staff is typically not privy to benefits that full time workers are. Plus, by making sure they are rewarded for their hard work by paying them for ALL of the hours they work, you will motivate them to work harder and perhaps even turn full time officially. The result? A loyal staff that will stick by you through thick and thin. Use a shift planner or employee scheduling software to schedule their shifts so that you have a record of the hours they worked.
Any manager worth his salt knows that a motivated staff is a loyal staff. This also includes your part time workers! Besides paying them fairly for all of the hours they work, treat them like valuable members of your team. Not only will they be more willing to stay on, but they will try and advance in your business by working harder. If you tell your part time workers that they don't have a chance of making it in your business, you will only lose valuable manpower. Plus, even if they do stay on, they won't work as hard and may even quit without notice.
Even if you can hire other part time workers to replace those who leave, you will have to re-train them. That's valuable time that you and your full time workers may not have to invest. Furthermore, new part time workers may not work as hard or be as punctual as the ones you allowed to leave. So, do the smart thing and treat your part time workers like you do your best employees. A team is only as strong as its weakest link after all.
Planning shifts to accommodate leaves and part time workers can be a challenge, but not when you have an online shift planner.
